This pattern is especially designed to meet the
requirements of a preemie quilt for use in a special care nursery.
Please use 100% cotton fabrics for top and flannellette for backing.
Colorful juvenile or animal-face prints work well to add a bit of
cheer. Do not use monofilament thread or tie the quilt.
Size:
Approximately 36" square.
Materials needed:
Quilt top: .8 meter (approx. 3/4
yd.) of dark 45" fabric.
.7 meter (approx. 3/4 yd.) of light 45" fabric.
Binding: (4 strips
cut 2" wide by width of fabric)
Backing: Approximately
38" by 38" sq. of flannellette
Batting: Approximately
38" by 38" sq. piece of batting
Center Square:
Cut 13 - 3 1/2" squares of dark fabric
Cut 12 - 3 1/2" squares of light fabric
Alternate light and dark squares as shown in photo above. Stitch
together, using 1/4-inch seams.
First Border:
Cut four 1 1/2" x 20" strips of light fabric. Place
right sides together against center square and stitch as a border.
Miter or butt corners as desired.
Second Border:
Cut several 3 1/2" strips of dark fabric and add as a border
to the square. Miter or butt corners as desired.
Third Border:
Cut several 3 1/2" strips of light fabric and add as a border
around the square. Miter or butt corners as desired.
Fourth Border:
Before cutting strips for the fourth border, check size of quilt
top against backing fabric or flannellette. Cut strips from dark
fabric to fit. Quilt top should measure about 36" square.
Finishing:
Press quilt top and backing. Place backing right side down, layer
with batting and quilt top (right side up). Baste, machine quilt
and bind as desired. Be sure to NOT tie or use monofilament thread.
